About Barnes

Barnes sits in a loop of the Thames on the eastern edge of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It feels like a village, with Barnes Pond and Barnes Green at its centre, a high street of independent shops, and the WWT London Wetland Centre to the north. Barnes Common stretches south towards the South Circular.

There are two stations: Barnes, on the edge of the common, and Barnes Bridge, by the river. Both have South Western Railway trains to Waterloo.

Journeys from Barnes

When you book Barnes taxis through us, a licensed private hire operator carries out your trip. Common journeys include:

  • Airports. Heathrow is typically 35–50 minutes away. Because Barnes is on the eastern side of the borough, London City Airport is a little closer than from Richmond itself.
  • Central London. Waterloo, Victoria and Charing Cross are among the shorter station runs from here.
  • Local trips to Richmond, Putney, Hammersmith and Kingston.
  • Days out to the Wetland Centre for visitors staying elsewhere.

Pick-up notes for Barnes

Barnes has narrow village streets, a busy high street and some roads with limited stopping. If you live on a tight street, add a note saying where the driver can stop. For pick-ups near the pond or the high street, a nearby side road is often easier.

The level crossings near Barnes and Barnes Bridge stations can cause short delays when the barriers are down. Allow a few extra minutes at busy times.

Routes to the airports

For Heathrow, drivers usually head west through Mortlake or East Sheen and Richmond, then on to the A316, or north to Chiswick and the M4. For Gatwick, the route often goes south across Barnes Common to the A3 at Roehampton. For London City, the South Circular is the natural route east.

Neighbouring areas

Barnes borders Mortlake to the west and East Sheen to the south-west. Putney is to the south-east, and Hammersmith is across the river to the north.
