Richmond to Luton by car
London Luton Airport is in Bedfordshire, just off the M1. From Richmond, getting there by train means travelling into central London, changing to a Thameslink train, and then taking the shuttle from Luton Airport Parkway to the terminal. It works, but it takes planning and a fair amount of walking.
A Richmond to Luton Airport taxi does the whole trip in one go. The car comes to your address, and the fare is agreed before you travel.
Journey time
Allow 60–90 minutes in typical traffic. Late-night and early-morning trips can be quicker. The slowest times are weekday rush hours and Friday afternoons, when both the M25 and the M1 can be busy.
Routes the driver may use
- North via the M4 and M25. From Richmond up through Chiswick or past Heathrow to the M25, clockwise to junction 21, then north on the M1. A longer distance, but mostly motorway.
- Through north-west London. Via Chiswick and the A406 North Circular to the M1 at Staples Corner. Shorter, but traffic on the North Circular can make it slower.
Drivers choose the best route on the day. Your price stays as quoted unless you change the trip.
At Luton Airport
Luton has a single terminal. Cars drop passengers off in a set drop-off zone, and the airport charges for using it. The quote shows whether that charge is included. For current details, check the official Luton Airport website.
If you are being collected, you can ask for meet and greet so the driver meets you inside the terminal. Airport parking time is usually added to the quote for this.
Booking tips for Luton
Luton is busy with short-haul and holiday flights, many of them early in the morning. A few tips:
- Book ahead. At least 24 hours ahead for normal trips, earlier for school holidays.
- Count the bags. Holiday luggage often needs an MPV rather than a saloon.
- Add your flight number for return pick-ups so the operator can plan around your landing time.
- Mention extras, such as a child seat or a pet, when you book. See our pet friendly taxi page if you are travelling with an animal to a pet-friendly destination.
Groups and families
For five or six people, an MPV is the usual choice. It seats up to six passengers with room for four suitcases and two cabin bags. See the 6 seater taxi page for more detail.
Leaving from different parts of Richmond
Luton is easier to reach from the northern side of the area. If you live in Kew or Isleworth, you are already close to the M4 or the North Circular. From Teddington or Hampton, the drive is usually via the M25.
Other airports
If Luton is not your airport this time, see our pages for Stansted and London City. If you are catching a train to Luton from central London, we can take you to King's Cross for Thameslink services from St Pancras next door.
