About Mortlake
Mortlake is a riverside part of south-west London, between Barnes and Kew. It is best known as the finishing point of the Boat Race, near Chiswick Bridge. Away from the river, streets of terraced houses and newer homes lead up to the railway and the A205 South Circular.
Mortlake station, on Sheen Lane, has South Western Railway trains to Waterloo and Reading. Sheen Lane crosses the railway at a level crossing beside the station, which can cause short queues when the barriers are down. That is worth knowing if you are being picked up nearby.
Journeys from Mortlake
When you book Mortlake taxis through us, a licensed private hire operator carries out your trip. Popular journeys include:
- Heathrow transfers. Typically 30–45 minutes, often via Chiswick and the M4.
- Gatwick and the other airports. See our Gatwick taxi page.
- London stations such as Paddington, where the A4 is close by.
- Local trips to Richmond, East Sheen, Barnes and Kew.
Pick-up notes
Many Mortlake streets are narrow, with parking on both sides. If your road is tight, add a note when you book saying where the driver can stop safely. Near the river, the Thames Path is pedestrian-only, so give a street address rather than a riverside spot.
On Boat Race day, roads near the finish are very busy and some may be closed. If you are travelling that day, allow plenty of extra time.
Getting to the airports
From Mortlake, the quickest way to Heathrow is usually north over Chiswick Bridge to the A316 and the Chiswick Roundabout, then the M4. For Gatwick, drivers often go south through East Sheen and Roehampton to the A3. Going east to London City Airport, the South Circular is the usual route.
Rail and Tube
Mortlake station's trains run direct to Waterloo. For the District line or the Overground, the nearest station is Richmond, or Kew Gardens. If you have an early train from a main London terminal, or heavy luggage, a car is often easier. See our Waterloo station taxi page.
Neighbouring areas
Mortlake shares the SW14 postcode with East Sheen to the south. Barnes is to the east along the river, and Kew is to the west.
