Across London to the Royal Docks
London City Airport is only around 18 miles from Richmond, but it is on the other side of London, in the Royal Docks near Canary Wharf. On public transport the trip involves the District line or a train into town, then the Jubilee line and the DLR. A Richmond to London City Airport taxi collects you from home and takes you straight to the terminal.
Because it is a short-haul business airport, many passengers fly with only a cabin bag and like to arrive close to departure time. That makes a reliable, pre-booked car especially useful.
Journey time
The distance is short but the roads are busy, so allow 60–90 minutes. During weekday rush hours, the drive can take longer. Late evenings and weekends are often quicker.
Which way will the driver go?
There are two broad options:
- The South Circular (A205) east through Putney, Wandsworth and south London, then north through the Blackwall or Rotherhithe area towards the Royal Docks.
- Through or along the edge of central London, then east on the A13.
Routes through central London may pass through the Congestion Charge zone. How the charge is handled depends on the operator, so check your quote. The driver will pick the best route on the day, and your quoted fare will not change because of it.
At the airport
London City has a single, compact terminal, which is one reason business travellers like it. The walk from drop-off to check-in is short. There is a set drop-off area outside the terminal. For arrivals, you can request meet and greet. The driver will park and meet you in the arrivals area. Any parking cost is usually added to the quote.
Business travel

Tips for business trips:
- Book your outbound and return trips together.
- Add your flight number so the return pick-up can be planned around your landing.
- If your meeting runs late and you need to change the time, call us as early as you can.

Eastern parts of the area, such as Barnes, Mortlake and East Sheen, are closest to the South Circular and often have a slightly shorter drive to London City.
