A long trip made simple
Stansted Airport is in Essex, north-east of London. From Richmond, it is on the opposite side of the capital, so by public transport you are looking at a District line or train journey into London, a change for the Stansted Express at Liverpool Street or Tottenham Hale, and then the train out to the airport. With luggage, that is a lot of stairs and platforms.
A Richmond to Stansted taxi turns that into one journey. You are collected at home and dropped at the terminal. The fare is fixed when you book, which matters on a longer trip where traffic can vary.
How long does it take?
Allow 80–110 minutes in normal traffic. That is a wide range because the route crosses or goes around London, and conditions change a lot through the day:
- Night and very early morning: often at the quicker end.
- Weekday rush hours: the M25 and North Circular can be slow, so allow longer.
- Friday afternoons and holiday weekends: the busiest times. Add a good margin.
Many Stansted flights leave early in the morning. For a 6am departure you may need to leave Richmond around 2.30am to 3am. Your driver will tell you if they want an earlier start because of roadworks or closures.
Route options
There are two main ways to get from Richmond to Stansted:
- The M25 clockwise. Up past Heathrow and around the west and north of London to junction 27, then the M11 north. This is the longer distance but often the steadier drive.
- Across north London. Via the A406 North Circular to the M11. It is shorter on paper but can be slow in heavy traffic.
The driver will choose the better option on the day. Your quoted price does not change because of the route they pick.
At Stansted Airport
Stansted has one terminal building, which keeps things simple. Drop-offs happen in a set drop-off area near the terminal, and the airport charges for using it. Check your quote to see if this charge is included, and see the official Stansted Airport website for the latest details.
For pick-ups, request meet and greet if you would like the driver to meet you inside. Parking time is charged by the airport and is normally added to the quote.
Which vehicle?
Low-cost airlines at Stansted often have strict cabin bag rules, so many travellers carry one hold bag each. Think about the total number of bags, not just passengers:
- Saloon: up to 4 passengers with 2 large cases.
- Minibus: up to 8 passengers for larger groups.
- MPV: up to 6 passengers. See our 6 seater taxi page.
For a group of seven, our 7 seater taxi page explains how those bookings work.
Book early
Because the journey is long and many flights leave at dawn, it is worth booking Stansted transfers as early as you can. Give us your flight number, the number of passengers and bags, and any special requests such as a child seat.
Coming back to Richmond
On the way home, the operator will plan the pick-up around your landing time if you include your flight number. Expect the drive back to take a similar time, longer if you land in the late afternoon on a weekday.
We arrange Stansted transfers from across the borough, including Kew, Barnes and St Margarets. If you fly from a closer airport next time, see Luton or Heathrow.
